Redemption comes in strange places, small spaces, calling out the best of who we are. It comes in small inspirations. It comes in loving community. It comes in helping a soul find its worth. I want to add to the beauty, to tell a better story. I want to shine with the light that's burning up inside. This is grace, an invitation to be beautiful.
You can't understand light unless you understand darkness, because that's where life is most often lived - somewhere between the two. It's messy and it's beautiful all at the same time.
What we must do is to stop regarding unpleasant or unexpected things as interruptions of real life. The truth is that interruptions are real life, the real life that God sends us day by day. What we call our real life is but a phantom of our imagination.

Today is Day 3 of Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings and if she hasn’t started to sweat yet, I imagine she will today. Judicial experts and pro-life advocates have ramped up their opposition this week and built a strong and compelling case against Elena Kagan becoming the US Supreme Court justice to replace Stevens. Though she [...]

Today was a very looooong day at the pool, evidenced by the fact that it is technically Saturday morning and I’m just now getting a chance to publish this post… One. Last weekend, Mosaic came to Parkview (my family’s church) to give a free concert on Saturday night and lead the worship services on …

Father’s Day 2010–or 1775?

My dad loves almost everything about the colonial period of American history–the politics, the written works, the major figures, the culture, and especially the food! Knowing this, my sisters and I planned an authentic meal from the official Colonial Williamsburg cookbook (yes, there really is such a thing) for our family to enjoy in celebration [...]

One. I have recently fallen in love with two new (to me) musicians, both of whom I highly recommend to you: Andrew Belle and Joshua Radin. Caroline first introduced me to Andrew Belle by giving me a copy of his new single. I loved it immediately and his thoughtful lyrics even inspired a blog post [...]

feet

I was in the middle of my run last Wednesday when, suddenly, my foot really started to hurt. Like seriously-painful-what-is-happening-to-me? hurt. I tried to run through it at first, but then it just got worse and I literally could not keep going. So I listened to my foot and I stopped. And, not wanting to [...]

Today I was reminded that even on a rainy, gloomy, 100% overcast day in June, when the pool can’t open so I can’t work, only the latest in a succession of rainy, gloomy, money-losing days, following on the heels of a handful of other disappointments–even on a day like that, like today, when everything seems [...]

By Julia G. Kiewit In the spirit of plundering the Egyptians for their gold, I wanted to share some thoughts that came from watching Mr. and Mrs. Smith. While it’s not a movie I’d ever put on any sort of recommended list, it was playing in the background the other day while I was doing [...]

See that little green thing on this cute baby’s head? Okay–big green thing? It’s a cap. Yes, a very large green cap. And, believe it or not, I knitted it. For hours and hours last Tuesday evening. (Welllll, maybe just for hours, but it sure felt like hours and hours.) I knitted it for my [...]
