Seven Quick Takes, Saturday Edition
Posted on 6/26/2010 at 12:07:51 AM
Today was a very looooong day at the pool, evidenced by the fact that it is technically Saturday morning and I’m just now getting a chance to publish this post…
One. Last weekend, Mosaic came to Parkview (my family’s church) to give a free concert on Saturday night and lead the worship services on Sunday morning. Mosaic is a contemporary Christian worship band composed of six friends, all of whom are graduates of Belmont University in Nashville. They perform, record, and compose an eclectic variety of songs whose lyrics are often pulled from Scripture and, this summer, they are touring the US. One of the members, Rachel Harlow, is a childhood friend of mine and the eldest daughter of Parkview’s senior pastor. I must say that Rachel and Mosaic did a phenomenal job, both on Saturday night and on Sunday morning. Most of their songs were off their second album, “As Long As It Is Day,” which they just released this month. It is incredibly diverse, uplifting, and worshipful. All that’s just to say: I would strongly recommend that you check them out on facebook, their website, and iTunes. Trust me–you won’t regret listening to them!
Two. I said in last Friday’s quick takes that SUMMER does (should) not mean thunderstorms and sweatshirts. Well, I was mistaken. I forgot that the Chicagoland area is notorious for crazy summer weather, and this week in particular should definitely get a prize. We had at least three huge thunderstorms (two on one day!) and a tornado warning, forcing us into my basement “bedroom” for a couple hours on Wednesday night! Swim lessons definitely suffered, streets and basements flooded, and a huge tree was knocked over at a nearby park. Thankfully, no one I know was injured, stranded, or flooded!
Three. Also on Wednesday, in between storms, I got a haircut. And not just any haircut. I’m pretty sure it’s the shortest haircut I’ve had since 4th grade! I basically just told her to do whatever she had to do to give me a trendy look and, not having a mirror directly in front of me (she came to our house), I ended up allowing her to chop off a lot more than I envisioned. But I’m not mad or anything. It’s a good change–lots of layers!–and my hair grows quickly anyway so it won’t be this short for long.
Four. When I’m not at the pool, I’m at home helping my dad with his work projects or helping around the house or trying to get my future in order, so–don’t hate me! but–I haven’t had time during the day to watch the World Cup or the Wimbledon Championships. But I still feel like I should mention them in this post since they are so important to a lot of people. So–hurray for the U.S. winning against Algeria on Wednesday (see photo of their victory pile-up below)! And, wow, longest tennis match ever! Amazing! (That’s it. That’s all I have to say about either sporting event, except, I guess–go USA!)
Five. Remember when I fell on the ice in February and was left with a huge scar on my left knee? Well, now I’ll probably have a twin scar to match it. I had a bit of a bike accident on Thursday morning involving a little girl who refused to move out of my way on the bike path. No, we did not collide but, in my effort to avoid a collision, I veered off the path and scraped up my right knee this time. (Oh and then just this evening I slipped on a puddle of water while entering the women’s locker room. Thankfully, no scrapes or blood this time, only a bruise, most likely, and a wet rear.)
Six. While Caroline and I were working at the pool on Thursday, the rest of our family picked cherries. A TON of cherries; both the sweet and the sour kind for eating and cooking. I helped pit some of them last night and now our basement freezer is loaded with bags and bags of sour cherries to last us until I graduate from law school. (I’m not completely sure whether that last statement is an exaggeration or not…)
Seven. I have a couple links to share for your enjoyment (so I guess I’m cheating since there’s a hidden number Eight in here–shhh! don’t tell!). The first is primarily for the women and the second is directed at the guys, though everyone will appreciate it:
–Wouldn’t this be a great nail color for the summer? The site describes it as a “flirty and pretty tropical aqua”. Nice.
–And if you haven’t seen or heard of Matt Koval, you must watch this hilarious video of his, entitled “How to Talk to Women.” Men? You might want to grab a pen and paper.
