Redemption comes in strange places, small spaces, calling out the best of who we are. It comes in small inspirations. It comes in loving community. It comes in helping a soul find its worth. I want to add to the beauty, to tell a better story. I want to shine with the light that's burning up inside. This is grace, an invitation to be beautiful.
You can't understand light unless you understand darkness, because that's where life is most often lived - somewhere between the two. It's messy and it's beautiful all at the same time.
What we must do is to stop regarding unpleasant or unexpected things as interruptions of real life. The truth is that interruptions are real life, the real life that God sends us day by day. What we call our real life is but a phantom of our imagination.

One. Monday evening, Mom and I spent a few hours stuffing envelopes for the congressional campaign of Isaac Hayes, the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Illinois’ 2nd District. Hayes is a Christian and a conservative, outspoken in his respect for human life and for the U.S. Constitution, born and raised on [...]

One. Even though the hearings are over, the Kagan saga continues. Now the big question is how the Republican senators will vote. The New York Times is keeping tabs on their public statements and tracking their votes here. Yesterday, McCain published his statement in USA Today opposing Kagan’s confirmation. As of today, …

This is probably more than you ever wanted to know…about my feet

feet

I was in the middle of my run last Wednesday when, suddenly, my foot really started to hurt. Like seriously-painful-what-is-happening-to-me? hurt. I tried to run through it at first, but then it just got worse and I literally could not keep going. So I listened to my foot and I stopped. And, not wanting to [...]

Remember Alexander and his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? Well, I kind of had one of those yesterday. One thing after another happened to make the day downright awful and just when I thought it was starting to improve – around 6pm when my wonderful roommate met me with a skinny cinnamon dolce [...]

Spring is here. I can taste it.

Posted on 3/7/2010 at 2:52:42 PM

Today is March 7 and it’s already starting to feel like spring. I say “already” because, in the Midwest, you cannot expect the days to feel like spring until at least April, if then. In Washington, DC, from what I hear, spring arrives in March and, best of all, the cherry blossoms arrive in March [...]

Today is day 6 of the “Historic” Washington Blizzard and, as I’m typing this, we’re actually experiencing Blizzard #2! Here’s a rundown on the sometimes-exciting-often-not events of the past few days… DAY 2…Jules came back around 5pm with stories of the humongous snow piles that had accumulated outside our door. So we ran outside to [...]

Today I am a Ma’am

Posted on 2/2/2010 at 8:39:51 PM

Okay, to be honest, I have never been called “ma’am” (that I can remember), but since that is the title of the episode when Mary Richards starts her new job in season 1, that is the title for this post about my new job internship. I may not be 30 yet, or getting paid, or [...]

twice as good

The past few days have been quite a whirlwind of activity – geographical, physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual activity. I arrived in Washington on Thursday afternoon (after a very turbulent flight) and was greeted by the incredible generosity and hospitality of two dear friends. My one friend kindly took a huge chunk out of his [...]
